Social, Cultural, and Spiritual Motivations of Substance Use – Mozambique

Organization:  Morning Hope Association of Mozambique

Background/Context:

The consumption of alcohol and other drugs among adolescents, young people and adults has been a cause of great concern for decades and has become a public health problem that is difficult to overcome (UNODC, 2023). The 2023 United Nations Drugs and Crime report highlighted that in Africa, 70% of people in treatment for alcohol and other drug use disorders are under 35 years of age. Several studies have been done in this area, however, there is still much to explore about the psychosocial motivations for the consumption of alcohol and other drugs in different age groups, including spiritual factors.
