A Faith and Fitness Approach to Senior Health Promotion in a Rural Maine Congregation

Organization:  Nation of Strength

Background/Context:

Nation of Strength would like to develop a community health ministry program specifically focused on promoting better physical health among older adults in rural settings. They would like to start with an existing 5-150 Wellness Model curriculum, adapting the exercise and nutrition content for a congregation-based cohort of older adults at a Protestant congregation in Western Maine.

Funded By: Nation of Strength

Research Question:

Does weekly group participation in a faith-based wellness curriculum increase older adults’ physical activity levels and knowledge?

Study Aims:

  1. Develop and refine the 5-150 wellness program for the congregation’s context
  2. Deliver the training to 10-20 participants in fall 2026 through a series of once weekly facilitated workshops over an 8 week period
  3. Measure the perceived impact of the program using a pre and post survey and participatory activity
  4. Develop recommendations to improve program content further based on study findings
  5. Share results through peer-reviewed publication, conferences, and other means

Impact:

Findings from this pilot project will allow the team to further develop the wellness program and approach for other congregations. An easy-to-use and effective faith and fitness program could be a valuable asset for congregations looking to promote physical health, social connectedness, shared growth in faith, and opportunities for community outreach.
