News of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo—and confirmed cases reaching Kampala—reminds us that for many of our Meros Africa partners, this is not distant news. It is the reality in their own communities. Public health systems cannot respond alone. During the West Africa Ebola outbreak (2013–2016), religious leaders became trusted voices of wisdom and compassion. One UN official in Sierra Leone described their involvement as “a game changer.” That truth remains today: churches are often the first place where fear, grief, questions, and misinformation arrive.

Yet, one persistent gap in outbreak response is practical, evidence-informed support for pastors and congregations. Knowing the church matters is not the same as knowing what to say to concerned members—or how and when to adapt practices responsibly. COVID-19 reminded the world that outbreaks spread through relationships, communities, and systems of trust. That reality places the church not at the margins, but at the center of response. This is not a liability—it is a calling to put faith into practice.

What Meros Africa Is Doing Now:

  1. Sharing reliable Ebola resources in English and French through our Meros Africa network channels.
  2. Equipping pastors with short, evidence-based summaries developed by Meros Scholars.
  3. Strengthening the global Church to learn from this outbreak and prepare for the next public health emergency.

Every step of this work is possible because of you—our donors, partners, and colleagues. Your generosity ensures that pastors across Africa receive accurate information rooted in both science and Scripture, enabling them to serve their communities with wisdom and courage.

If you are asking yourself, “What can I do to help with Ebola?”—consider partnering with us. Your support equips faith leaders to respond with compassion and evidence, protecting lives and strengthening communities.
